Day two of the delayed school year… After entering the kids place their snack pouches on the ping-ping table. With the help of a child, a staffer empties the contents of the containers that help the juice and a snack. The containers are then washed so they are ready for the next day.

Earlier in the week, Dr. Stephanie took Moïse to the Jerusalem Clinic because his gums were inflamed. I drove them. When Steph placed Moïse in the back seat he slid to the middle of the seat. Steph remained outside waiting for Mimi (the nannie) to come. Moïse taped the seat next to the opened door and said, “Chita”—which is Creole for “sit.” I could not believe it.
