A few months we had an infusion of rats entering Santa Chiara from under the back wall. They come up from below us. Over the years, we tried everything to eliminate the problem. Nothing worked. The rats always outsmarted us.

Last Wednesday afternoon, I heard loud music coming from the school. A staff member was playing a video of a church group performing an inspirational song in a dance routine. She would pause the video to explain the choreography to the older girls. With all eyes on the TV monitor the girls tried to mimic the dance routine.

For a poet to spend a week in the yard of Santa Chiara, they would get lost in a world of wonder, awe, and joy along with some tears and lots of noisy cheers of the young lives truly lived from the heart. And now, the ocean front with its rhythmic waves beacons me into a mindset of stillness and silence where time fades.

I took this photo on Tuesday at 1:40pm. There was stillness and silence in the yard. Minutes later, the stillness and silence were shattered when the kids burst throw the gate and ran in every possible direction. Many ran to me…with hugs and kisses. I like to be downstairs when they come home from school, to say, “Welcome home.”
