The Secret of Life

The secret was slowly revealed to me after what I consider to have been a mystical moment in the empty church in Rome in March 1995. For five years I put every ounce of my being into writing a book on Saint Francis of Assisi, something no one thought I could do, including me. Making two dozen films mostly on poverty around the world required the same dedication, but a less intense effort and less time consuming. But then shorty after my 68th birthday I did something truly impossible that has consumed every ounce of my being and virtually all my time . . . starting Santa Chiara.

On the Precipice of Catastrophe

When we leave Santa Chiara to shop, we will see lots of heavily armed police and pass through a few police check points. But the gangs still control much of Port-au-Prince. Goods and services into the city are slowed and often delayed, making many items scarce. Humanitarian aid has slowed to a trickle.
