Today is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. If I had to pick one word to describe the hallmark of the saint’s spirituality, it would be compassion. Compassion is a key dimension of a love that unites strangers, that unites one human to another, heart to heart. Humanity is becoming increasingly fragmented. Compassion brings together the deepest core of the inner life beyond the borders of race, gender, religion, culture, or tribe.
