The following is an excerpt from my book, The Loneliness and Longing of St. Francis:
…Francis was drawn deeper and deeper into solitude as he struggled to figure how he could best serve God. He spent lots of time in prayer, praying in isolated woods and empty churches. One day he was praying for guidance in the small church of St. Mary of the Angels, a decaying shrine hidden in the woods.
