For the past three years, we have wanted to pave the lot adjacent to the main house. More than half the lot is rocky, uneven dirt. At one time much of that space was taken up by the old black bus, which we had dismantled and carted away. The back 30% of the lot is where the schoolhouse, the men’s quarters, and the two rooms were the boys sleep.
Over the years, we slowly removed most of the larger rocks and many of the small rocks. Kids running around often tripped on the rocks. Even Fr. John Dear took a nasty fall while playing soccer when he tripped on a rock. But the dirt poses an even larger problem. The social worker and the doctor have both stated the area needs to be paved because the dirt is continually blowing dust, which is unhealthy.
